Fair surfbikini series: Sensi Graves bikinis

Sensi bikinis

English version below

How is Sensi Bikinis environmentally aware?
Our company is environmentally aware in a few different aspects. First and foremost, we are a 1% for the planet member, meaning we donate 1% of our sales to non-profits dedicated to the environment. Secondly, we don’t package our bikinis in any plastic. Almost all clothing companies utilize plastic packaging to protect the goods, but for us, it’s just not worth it to produce that much excess waste. Finally, we use all recycled hang tags, packaging, business cards, labels and anything and everything else that I can find. We don’t make all of our bikinis out of recycled materials but we do utilize some, in this year’s collection the midnight blue and watermelon colorways are both made from recycled sources. I feel as though we could always be doing more, but it’s a step in the right direction and hopefully other companies follow suit!

How do you hope to make a difference as a fair surfbikini brand?
We hope to make a difference as a surf bikini brand by giving our customers a product that they love and are proud to wear. First and foremost, our suits are meant to stay on and it’s that fierce functionality combined with fabulous femininity that sets us apart. We really hope to inspire women to get outside and be active and in doing so grow to love and want to protect our planet. Go out and live with purpose!

What is your favorite way to get inspired for your designs?
My favorite way to draw inspiration is by keeping my eyes and ears open. I find so much inspiration everywhere-be it a print on a tile or the colors in an umbrella. I’m lucky that I get to travel to so many fabulous places and draw from other cultures. I also love perusing pinterest. There are just so many beautiful things to look at. It’s fun to find so many genuinely awesome creative people all in one place. That’s inspiring.

What’s your favorite piece in 2016’s collection?
My favorite piece from the 2016 collection is the Sara top and Sophie Bottom in heat wave. The Sara is such a strong, feminine design and it seriously does not move when surfing or kiting. The Sophie bottoms are one of our cheekiest cuts and are just plain fun to wear when you’re feeling a little sassy.

Kortingscode

Sensi bikinis

In the next weeks a post on fair surfbikinis will be published weekly at The sea is my cup of tea. To me, it’s important that my clothes are produced in a fair and sustainable way, and this of course also goes for surfbikinis. That’s why I contacted some of my favourite brands to ask them about their production process, to decide if they work in a fair and sustainable manner. The fair surfbikini series is the result of my investigation: each week I will highlight a brand that produces awesome and fair surfbikinis plus a discount code or give away!

The first post in these series is about the Sensi Graves bikinis. You might already know the popular Dawn bikini top, that’s not only fashionable but also designed to stick when surfing. I spotted them for the first time a couple of summers ago and instantly fell in love. But to me, the story behind a product is just as important as the design. When I contacted founder Sensi, I immediately knew fair and sustainable production is just as important to her as it is to me. She promotes a small and personal approach to production. I asked her some questions to get a complete idea of the production process.

Producton of the Sensi Bikinis
All Sensi bikinis are produced on a small scale in a mother-daughter run factory in Portland, Oregon. There’s three to four sewers working on the suits at a time. Sensi joked: “No sweat shops here :-)” Sensi prefers to work local and environmentally aware. Therefore, all packaging, hang tags and labels are made from recycled material. This is also the first year Sensi is experimenting with recycled fabrics, with good results. In case you’re curious: the ‘midnight blue’ and ‘watermelon’ colour ways are made from recycled fabrics (100% recycled polyamide). With promising results, this might create new perspectives for the future collections. I do believe fair and eco-friendly production is an ever evolving process!

Some other questions I asked Sensi about her fair surfbikini’s:
